You know you’re in trying-to-conceive mode when the decision between boxers and briefs depends on the fate of your hubby’s sperm health and his style preference is put on the back burner.

This ongoing debate is a long one. Male fertility health is just as important as female, hence your partner’s choice in underwear should be the last thing that hinders you from getting a positive pregnancy test!

Read on to learn whether boxers or briefs helps support male fertility!

Boxers vs. Briefs

A study published on the Oxford University Press’ academic website observed 656 men who were experiencing fertility issues. They disclosed whether they wore boxers or briefs three months before having their semen samples analyzed.

The semen samples tested their sperm concentration, count, motility, and morphology and the study reported that: “Men who wore boxers had a higher sperm count than men who wore briefs”.

The New York Times adds that: “Compared with men who wore tight underwear, those who wore boxers had 25% higher sperm concentration, 17% higher sperm count and 33% higher moving sperm count”.

Overheating

If boxers and briefs are both made from the same materials, how can briefs have such a negative effect on male fertility? Human testes cannot function correctly unless they are able to stay cooler than the rest of the body. If the temperature of the testicles is 98 degrees, sperm production will stop, and when the production is interrupted, the sperm can be negatively impacted for months.

Lidia Mínguez-Alarcón who worked on the study at the Harvard T H Chan School of Public Health Clinic, explains how high temperatures can lessen sperm production and weaken functionality: “It has been shown that high scrotal temperatures alter spermatogenesis… Men wearing tighter underwear may have higher scrotal temperatures compared to men wearing looser underwear.”
