Whether fact or fiction, many believe that cats and dogs can sense ghosts, spirits, and paranormal activity. While we can’t confirm or deny, another theory has certainly caught our attention: can our pets tell if we are pregnant before we grow a bump? It is no secret that pets have a heightened sense of smell and sound, but does this mean that they can also sense pregnancy?

Read on to find out if your pets have a sixth sense when it comes to detecting pregnancy.

Pets May Notice a Change in Smell

As mentioned earlier, cats and dogs have an incredible sense of smell. In fact, PBS shares that dogs, “Possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in humans. And the part of a dog’s brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is, proportionally speaking, 40 times greater than ours”.

Cats have twice as many nose receptors as humans and that said, when a woman is pregnant, her body chemistry changes, including her body odor. No wonder your furry babies know something’s up!

Pets May Notice a Change in Your Mood & Body Language

A study conducted by Moriah Galvan and Jennifer Vonk of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, prove that cats can read human facial expressions and react to their owners with positive actions when presented with smiles. Dogs can also read their owners facial expression and may wag their tail when they see their owners beam.

Your furry companions are constantly watching and observing you. They notice when you’ve adopted that pregnancy waddle or need to take frequent breaks during their daily walks. They may react by being overprotective and extra cuddly to give you moral support.

So while there is no hard evidence to support your pets awareness of a bun in the oven, your furry family members do notice a slight change in your scent, mood, and behavior.

Let’s just hope they don’t get bit by the jealousy bug!
